The wife of Sula Sizoomu, a Very Important Persons Protection Unit officer assigned to protect National Unity Platform presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, is appealing for justice. Sizoomu sustained severe jaw injuries from a tear gas canister during a January 9 campaign event in Mukono but received no support from police despite requests.
Arrested weeks later after a summons to headquarters, Sizoomu was handcuffed violently, his home searched, and belongings seized, even though he was not on duty on election day and was still recovering at a private clinic. His wife, mother of four young children including a Primary Seven candidate, described his worsening condition in detention at Railway Police Station, lacking proper care and food.
Without their breadwinner, the family faces eviction, unpaid school fees, rent, and meals, relying on friends for basics. She demands payment of his dues and either release or fair prosecution for him and the other affected officers—two detained, five on bond, nine dismissed.
Bobi Wine condemned the arrests as a ‘criminal decision,’ urging protection for professional officers. Human rights advocate Sarah Birete called for salary payments during investigations and advised approaching the Uganda Human Rights Commission. Police deputy spokesperson Diana Nandawula promised to verify claims.
