The Government of Uganda has allocated Shs30 billion in low-interest loans to support hotel owners in the Bunyoro sub-region, preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This funding, channeled via the Ministry of Finance, aims to elevate facilities to five-star levels for hosting players, officials, and visitors.

Hoima City, one of Uganda’s selected host cities, will use Hoima Stadium for matches and needs quality accommodation. Only six hotels will be chosen for upgrades to serve four teams, with Shs5.5 billion earmarked for official team hotels at a 5% interest rate and three-year repayment grace period.

An additional Shs25 billion targets other hotels for fans and visitors, ensuring broader benefits. Hoteliers have engaged with agencies like the Uganda Tourism Board and Ministry of Tourism on eligibility.

Rogers Byamukama Araali, head of the AFCON hotel inspection team in Bunyoro, confirmed ongoing assessments. “We’re guiding owners on requirements like modern rooms, reliable utilities, security, and trained staff,” he stated.

Local hoteliers like Balaam Barugahara in Masindi see it as a chance to compete, while Serunkuma Abdualah, Masindi business chair, highlighted job creation in construction, transport, and hospitality. Tadiu Musiime noted lasting tourism gains post-tournament.

Uganda co-hosts AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania, with Hoima Stadium recently commissioned by President Museveni.
