TotalEnergies has officially opened its refurbished Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plant in Jinja, marking a key move to ready Uganda for homegrown LPG output.

At the launch event, Managing Director Olufemi Babajide emphasized that the upgrade goes beyond meeting today’s demand. It builds vital infrastructure for the nation’s growing oil and gas industry, ensuring smooth processing and distribution of locally produced LPG.

“This plant underscores our dedication to delivering reliable, clean energy as Uganda advances toward domestic production,” Babajide stated. He highlighted the need to enhance storage and logistics now to handle future supplies effectively.

The facility’s expanded storage and bottling capacity will cut import costs, stabilize supply chains, and boost the downstream sector—crucial for a landlocked nation like Uganda. According to the Clean Cooking Alliance, these improvements promote bulk handling and wider clean cooking adoption.

Biova Agbokou, TotalEnergies’ Executive Vice President for East and Central Africa, noted the plant advances the company’s target of providing clean cooking to 100 million people in Africa and India by 2030. It helps reduce health risks from traditional fuels like firewood.

This initiative fits Uganda’s shift to cleaner energy, positioning the country to leverage its oil and gas resources, lower import dependence, and make LPG more affordable.

Experts view the Jinja plant as pivotal for integrating local gas into the market and fostering a sustainable LPG sector.
