Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi turned down the commissioning of the Shs 1.2 billion Kanapa Water Facility in Kumi district during a recent site visit. The project, meant for handover this week, remains incomplete with key treatment parts absent.

Magyezi likened the situation to drinking unprocessed beer, stressing that vital stages must be finished. “You cannot see a defect and proceed,” he stated, highlighting risks to public health if rushed.

He urged patience, noting leaders bear responsibility if contaminated water harms residents, especially children. Despite this, he praised the overall progress on the facility.

Funded under the LEGS Project by Uganda’s government and the Islamic Development Bank, the initiative is 93% done. Project supervisor Eng. Peter Mawanda explained that a crucial dosing machine, the dozatrone, awaits delivery via National Transportation Corporation.

Mawanda anticipates full completion, including tests, by April 24, 2026. Kumi RDC John Bosco Mubito supported the minister’s stance, calling for backing the contractor amid challenges rather than undue pressure.
