With two months until Uganda Martyrs Day on June 3, the Kasese Diocese under Mbarara Archdiocese has heightened its spiritual and liturgical efforts for the Namugongo commemorations.

Over 300 choristers from the diocese’s 14 Catholic parishes are participating in a week-long training at St Augustine Catechists’ Training Centre in Nsenyi, Kisinga Town Council. The sessions focus on more than 100 hymns in various languages to foster prayer, praise, and reflection on the martyrs’ legacy.

Diocesan choir chaplain Rev Fr Mariko Bwambale highlighted the dual musical and spiritual aspects of the preparations. He praised the choristers’ dedication, emphasizing their role in evangelizing and inspiring attendees beyond mere performance.

Chief trainer Vincent Muhindo noted the group’s discipline and adaptability, expressing confidence in a liturgically sound performance. Following Nsenyi, rehearsals continued at Holy Dove Vocation Secondary School in Kinyamaseke before heading to Namugongo.

This year’s event is particularly meaningful for Kasese, last leading national prayers in 2005. Under Bishop Francis Aquirinus Kibira Kambale and a 13-member committee chaired by Rev Fr John Baptist Kule, celebrations follow the theme ‘Christ is alive in you and me.’

Financial hurdles persist, with only Shs250 million raised toward a Shs4.5 billion budget. Rev Fr Kule called for contributions from all. Pilgrims from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo are anticipated in large numbers.
