A fierce storm battered Igoti Primary School in Apac District on March 24, 2026, sending over 900 pupils home after it tore off roofs from all classroom blocks, the library, and the headteacher’s office.

Headteacher Oscar Okello reported extensive losses, including newly purchased textbooks, broken desks, chalk, and other teaching materials, all rendered unusable by the downpour.

Authorities decided to suspend classes for one week starting Wednesday to evaluate the full extent of the destruction. Sam Opira, Apac District’s secretary for health and education, urged parents to contribute to repair efforts and announced a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend to plan rebuilding.

The storm’s impact extended beyond the school, demolishing structures in 34 nearby households, claiming one life and injuring several others, according to Tom Okello, the LC1 chairperson of Igoti Village.

Despite the enrollment of 1,112 pupils, P6 and P7 candidates stayed on site, continuing lessons in adjacent churches.
