A fierce blaze erupted on Wednesday evening at Elgon Junior Christian School, one of Sironko District’s largest private primary schools, gutting a boys’ dormitory and a classroom. The incident left pupils, staff, and parents reeling from the massive property loss estimated in millions of shillings.
Eyewitnesses reported the fire starting around 3pm in the dormitory, a permanent structure rebuilt after a prior blaze with support from Sironko District Woman MP-elect Asha Nabulo Mafabi and international volunteers. All contents, including books, clothes, and bedding, were reduced to ashes.
Four boys inside at the time were safely rescued, thanks to most pupils being in class. Local leader Henry Yona Wambede noted a two-day power outage complicated pinpointing the cause, while parent Simon Woniala suspected unauthorized entry from the rear, hinting at possible arson.
Teacher Joel Wadada confirmed no injuries occurred due to the timing, but personal items were completely lost. Resident Stella Nambozo highlighted recurring fires at the school and called for government aid.
Elgon Regional Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika stated investigations are underway. This event aligns with Uganda Police’s 2024 Crime Report, showing a 9% rise in school fires to 55 cases, driven by electrical faults, candles, negligence, and arson often linked to grudges.
