Uganda’s coffee exports have surged, with the Uganda Coffee Producers Association (UCPA) forecasting earnings of Shs20 trillion by 2030, more than doubling the current Shs9 trillion level.
From December 2024 to December 2025, the country shipped 8.7 million 60-kg bags, generating $2.4 billion (Shs9.2 trillion). This marks a 77% rise in value and 48% in volume compared to the prior year, driven by higher production in central and eastern regions plus favorable global prices amid Vietnam’s supply issues.
UCPA Chairperson Ian Clarke emphasized rehabilitating aging farms on 400,000 smallholder plots, climate-resilient practices, and expanding to mid-northern areas with drought-resistant varieties from the Coffee Research Institute. Better pruning, weeding, and fertilizers could double yields per tree.
The industry is shifting from raw green beans to higher-value processed goods like soluble and roasted coffee, alongside investments in roasting, packaging, and quality training to meet EU Deforestation Regulation standards via geospatial farm registration.
Leading firms such as Ideal Quality Commodities, Olam Uganda, and Touton Uganda are at the forefront. In November 2025 alone, exports fetched $186 million.
British High Commissioner Lisa Chesney voiced UK support for value chain upgrades and market links. Uganda is also boosting certified labs, targeting China and the Middle East, using digital traceability, financing, extension services, and streamlined exports via the Electronic Single Window.
