Ugandan authorities conducted a night operation in Jinja City, eastern Uganda, leading to the arrest of 66 irregular immigrants working without proper documentation. The team also inspected 77 others who possessed valid immigration papers.
Simon Mundeyi, spokesperson for the Internal Affairs Ministry, confirmed the details, noting the nationalities involved include India, Nepal, China, and Pakistan. This action is part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal migrant labor, particularly in retail trade and the informal sector.
Officials express worry that undocumented foreigners are occupying jobs meant for Ugandans, worsening unemployment. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics reports a national rate of about 9 percent, with youth unemployment exceeding 13 percent.
Mundeyi urged foreign nationals to obtain work permits and warned employers against hiring undocumented workers, promising continued operations across eastern and western Uganda. Compliant immigrants were commended for following the law.
The government aims to regulate the labor market, ensure fair competition, and promote legal migration.
