Timothy ‘Timo’ Jumba’s rise in Uganda’s radio world started in Mutundwe, where as a teen he crafted a makeshift studio with borrowed gear. Lacking funds for basics like a pop filter, he improvised one from shorts mesh, sparking a career marked by ingenuity.
Initially a music producer for artists like Navio, A-Pass, and others, Jumba honed skills by shadowing pros and late-night experimenting. A friend’s tip led him to Kingdom FM, where low pay felt like a setback, but it ignited his voiceover passion.
Alone in the studio after hours, he tested tones and pacing, drawing from his musical rhythm sense. His jingles for ‘Abafere be Kibuga’ stunned the manager, launching his on-air reputation for speed and precision amid challenges like irregular payments.
After stints in Mbale at Open Gate FM and Step FM, blending local languages for authentic imaging, Jumba aced a Galaxy FM audition, finishing a jingle in minutes. Over eight years there, he revamped the station’s sound, shifting jingles to English to broaden appeal seamlessly.
Today, Jumba crafts story-driven ads with humor and emotional hooks, pushing ‘short and sweet’ formats for modern listeners. His versatile background keeps him competing against himself, remaining a behind-the-scenes force in Uganda’s airwaves.
