National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has firmly stated that he will only return to Uganda as a free citizen, refusing any form of negotiated settlement with the authorities.
In an interview with France 24 from his exile in the United States, Bobi Wine expressed that he remains under threat even abroad. He noted being followed and referenced historical cases where Ugandan dissidents faced harm or assassination outside the country.
His exit came after the controversial January 15, 2026 presidential elections. Security forces allegedly raided his Magere residence, forcing him into hiding before he fled and appeared in Washington.
Bobi Wine rejected rumors of mediation by William Popp between him and President Yoweri Museveni. ‘We don’t need negotiation for our party’s recognition; the law isn’t negotiable,’ he asserted.
While open to dialogue, he opposed ‘transactional politics’ and insisted, ‘I won’t negotiate my freedom—it must be guaranteed.’ He reaffirmed his dedication to Uganda, saying his political fight belongs there and he must return freely, not begging for rights.
