Woman Held for Burning Nephew's Hands Over Alleged Shs100,000 Theft

Police in Wakiso District detained a 34-year-old woman accused of severely injuring her young nephew in Mutundwe.

Esther Nankunda, entrusted with caring for the 10-year-old Primary Four pupil, allegedly heated a polythene bag and burned his hands on March 20. She accused the boy of stealing Shs100,000 during Eid al-Fitr festivities in Kanaala Zone, Mutundwe Parish, Bunamwaya Division.

The child’s severe burns were spotted at school, prompting staff to contact Kampala Metropolitan Police. Officers visited the home and took Nankunda into custody.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the details. The victim has undergone a medical examination, and the suspect awaits court action.

Nationwide, child abuse cases dropped to 787 in 2024 from 866 in 2023, a nine percent decrease. Authorities call for reporting such incidents to safeguard children.
