Uganda’s junior boys golf team kicked off the All Africa Junior Team Championship strongly at Windsor Golf & Country Club in Nairobi, carding a team total of 230 on the opening day.

Antony Otukei led the charge with a one-over 73, backed by Peter Mayende’s 78 and Shaka Kariisa’s 79. This effort positioned the boys in fourth place, trailing leaders South Africa, with Kenya in second.

Shaka Kariisa, reflecting on his round, admitted to fading late but vowed to stay focused and manage stamina better on Wednesday. ‘It’s a tight course but playable,’ he said.

In contrast, the Ugandan girls struggled, landing sixth with Racheal Natukunda’s 83 and Keisha Kagoro’s 84, 27 strokes behind South Africa’s dominant girls’ team.

Team manager Paul Habyarimana remains optimistic, stating the players know what needs fixing to climb the leaderboard. Light showers disrupted morning play, but teams are prepared for similar conditions on day two.

The stakes are high: the top two teams in each category qualify for the 2026 Toyota Junior World Cup in Tokyo. Uganda’s squad, led by Flavia Namakula, is backed by the National Council of Sports, Kenya Airways, Uganda Golf Union, and R&A.
