Authorities in Kayunga arrested two head teachers on March 23 for suspected malpractice during the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE). This led to the cancellation of results for 30 candidates.
The suspects are George Kundu, 58, from Nanjwenge Church of Uganda Primary School in Kitimbwa Sub-county, and Valentino Obbo, 35, from Great Harvest Primary School in Busaana Sub-county. Investigations focus on registering private candidates under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program and not paying exam fees to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB).
Collins Kafeero, the district probation and welfare officer, confirmed the arrests as part of an ongoing probe. Nanjwenge is a government-aided UPE school where 76 candidates, including some from nearby schools, sat for PLE.
Great Harvest, a private two-year-old institution, was shut down immediately due to substandard conditions. Inspectors found learners in makeshift classrooms without toilets, and the school lacked a license, according to district education officer Dan Bubaale.
Bubaale noted investigations into the result cancellations and recommended Kundu face the district rewards and sanctions committee, potentially leading to his removal. Obbo faces exam malpractice charges, while Kundu may be charged with abuse of office.
Among the affected candidates is 13-year-old Jovia Namukose, who gained public sympathy after being abandoned by her parents and caring for siblings. She received support from Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans for her education.
