Manchester City delivered a strong performance to win the League Cup final 2-0 against Premier League leaders Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Nico O’Reilly scored twice in the second half, giving City their ninth triumph in the competition.
Arsenal entered as favorites aiming for their first trophy since 2020 but struggled throughout the match. The first half ended goalless in a lackluster affair, but City elevated their game after the break.
On the hour mark, O’Reilly pounced on a mishandled cross by Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, heading into an open goal. Just four minutes later, he struck again, powering in a header from Matheus Nunes’ precise delivery to seal the victory.
Pep Guardiola now holds the record for most League Cup wins with five since joining in 2016, surpassing managers like Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson. Arsenal showed little creativity, with a late Gabriel effort hitting the bar, but it wasn’t enough.
City’s fans celebrated wildly as Bernardo Silva lifted the trophy, while many Arsenal supporters had already departed. Despite trailing Arsenal by nine points in the league, this win reaffirms City’s trophy pedigree.
