Residents in Kayunga District were left in disbelief when unidentified people exhumed bodies from two separate graves in Nalumuli and Kiwalasi villages.

Enock Ntege, the LC1 chairperson of Nalumuli Village, reported that the body of Eremiya Wambi, who passed away in 2022 at age 55, was removed from its grave on Sunday night. Godfrey Ntinda, the deceased’s younger brother, discovered the disturbed grave the next day, with burial clothes scattered around and a panga left nearby.

The body was later located in a bush in adjacent Nakatovu Village after a local resident raised the alarm. Local leaders promptly notified the police, who moved the remains to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital mortuary.

An unidentified body was also exhumed from a grave in Kiwalasi Village, Kangulumira Sub-county, but it remained missing at the time of reporting.

Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson Hellen Butoto confirmed that probes into both cases continue. A police insider, anonymously, suggested connections to witchcraft rituals where human parts are exploited to deceive victims.

This event echoes a 2011 incident in the district where 12 bodies were exhumed overnight.
