From Reckless Youth to Cautious Adulthood: Uganda's Shift to Self-Preservation

A reflective piece contrasts the carefree, risk-taking days of youth in Uganda—daily boda boda commutes through floods and potholes, all-nighters at work, junk food binges—with the calculated, health-focused choices of middle age, where comfort, safety, and selective socializing take priority. Remember the days of hopping on a boda boda twice daily from Kira-Kitukutwe to Bunga-Ggaba, rain or shine, dodging potholes without a second thought? Those 30-minute rides felt like nothing, even wading through flooded roads like Lake Kyambogo.

Back then, work meant pulling all-nighters, skipping proper meals for junk, and devouring half-cooked meats at dingy bars. High heels were endured just for the office entrance, and a stranger’s comment could spoil your day. Parties with unfamiliar faces and drinking anything fancy were the norm—hangovers be damned.

Youth allowed irregular church visits, prayers only in desperation, and total flexibility in schedules. Recklessness paired with joy, and that was just the legal adventures.

Now, age brings caution. Rising from bed is slow to avoid injury; dropped items wait for younger hands. Dancing amid sweaty crowds for cheap drinks? No thanks.

Health rules: balanced meals, hydration, exercise, and sleep are essentials. Naps are treasures, clothes prioritize comfort over flash. Social events are handpicked, buffets approached warily—40-year-old digestion doesn’t forgive.

Party invites prompt ‘why?’ not ‘where?’. Salons are chosen for hygiene and service, not show. Faith is daily now, countering office drama and supporting kids’ needs.

Even boda bodas require scrutiny: clear eyes, sober breath, family-man vibe, modern bike, proper helmet. Life demands self-preservation.
