A devastating incident unfolded early Sunday morning on the Kampala-Gulu Highway in Ngogolo Village, Butuntumula Sub-county, Luwero District. Around 6:00am, a Mercedes-Benz truck (SSD 908A) towing a trailer (SSD 909A) experienced a catastrophic failure, with the trailer detaching and veering off the road into a nearby structure.

The victims, identified as 38-year-old Annet Nandyose and her three-year-old daughter Doreen Nakazi, died instantly at the scene. Annet’s husband, Samuel Kigwe, and a juvenile named Jovan Kalule sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Luwero Hospital.

Savannah regional police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima confirmed the truck was heading from Gulu to Kampala when the trailer broke loose. Eyewitness Rashid Mulima described the sudden event: the trailer separated abruptly and crashed directly into the building, while the truck halted shortly ahead.

The collision wrecked a photo studio owned by Fred Ntambi, who pegged his damages at Shs15 million, lamenting the total loss of his livelihood. Family members, including teenager Marvin Nakibinge, expressed grief over the orphans left behind, noting Annet as the primary caregiver for six children.

Authorities impounded the truck for inspection, and the bodies were moved to Luwero Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Local leader Geoffrey Matovu, LCIII councillor, demanded protective barriers on the highway, which has seen over five fatalities since March 10 amid frequent accidents from speeding and mechanical issues.

Investigations continue into this busy transport route’s persistent safety challenges.
