Leaders in Wakiso District celebrated the start of major road expansion projects valued at Shs110 billion, aimed at easing chronic traffic jams in the Kampala metropolitan region.

Launched at Jjanyi Church of Uganda Primary School in Kajjansi Town Council, the initiative falls under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), supported by the World Bank.

Key upgrades include the 8.9km Seguku–Nalumunye–Bandwe–Kinaawa–Kyengera road plus a 0.9km Seguku Link, and the 7.5km Namulanda–Bweya–Kajjansi road. The former costs Shs56 billion, while the latter is Shs57 billion.

Wakiso CAO Jude Mark Bukenya described the works as a milestone for transport infrastructure. District chairperson Matia Lwanga Bwanika welcomed the projects but called on contractors to prioritize impassable feeder roads to reduce resident disruptions.

He also encouraged leaders to rally youth for job opportunities during construction. Urban Administration Commissioner Charles Magumba noted the roads will serve as alternatives to busy routes like Entebbe Road and Kampala–Masaka highway.

Under Secretary Monica Edemachu in the Ministry of Kampala stressed safety, timely completion within 18 months, and local hiring. Nova Consult will oversee the projects, with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and China Wu Yi Construction Co. Ltd. as contractors.
