Japan has pledged Shs3.5 billion to advance education and climate resilience in Uganda, with grants signed at the Japanese Embassy in Kampala.
Chargé d’Affaires Yoshida Norimasa emphasized Japan’s dedication to sustainable development through public-private partnerships, expressing hope that the projects will deliver enduring community benefits.
In Yumbe District’s BidiBidi Refugee Settlement, home to over 200,000 refugees, World Vision Japan will enhance education for 31,000 people across 10 schools. Efforts include building classrooms and sanitation facilities, supplying learning materials, training teachers for children with disabilities, and supporting girls’ retention to foster inclusive learning environments.
Riho Kotoku, representing the organization, highlighted how these investments promote peace and future opportunities for Uganda’s youth.
Meanwhile, in Kassanda District, Community Road Empowerment (CORE) addresses droughts, erratic rains, and degrading land affecting water access and livelihoods. The funding will construct a six-million-litre water reservoir for over 500 households and establish commercial woodlots for forest restoration, soil recovery, carbon sequestration, and income generation.
Project manager Yuka Iwamura noted the strategy’s focus on immediate relief and long-term sustainability, urging community ownership for maintenance.
