IT professionals from the Kigezi sub-region voiced significant obstacles impeding tech innovations, particularly in upcountry educational facilities, during a stakeholder forum in Kabale Town.

The event, hosted by the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, focused on Uganda’s National Strategy on Emerging Technologies.

Benjamin Taremwa, IT Officer at Rugarama Hospital, highlighted issues like poor digital infrastructure, inconsistent power supply, high bandwidth costs, and limited access to advanced computing resources. He also stressed the need to revise laws for better data protection and innovation governance.

Dr. Willbroad Byamukama of Agro-innovations Ltd advocated for new regulations, tax reductions, subsidized tools, rural internet expansion, and stable electricity to drive sector growth.

Gloria Nassuna, a Data Networks Engineer at the Ministry of ICT, assured that these inputs will shape the national strategy being crafted with the National Information Technology Authority.

The ongoing consultations aim to create a framework for responsibly adopting emerging digital technologies nationwide.
