Police in Budaka District have arrested 30-year-old Eria Odongo, a teacher at Nampiido Primary School, on suspicion of aggravated defilement.

Odongo, from Tirinyi Central A Village in Kibuku District, allegedly instructed the 16-year-old Primary Seven pupil to join him at the market on March 17, 2026, around 9:30 a.m. He then took her by motorcycle to a hotel in Budaka, where he made inappropriate advances.

The girl raised an alarm as the teacher touched her, prompting residents to intervene and hand him over to Budaka Central Police Station. He remains in custody while investigations proceed.

ASP Wilfred Kyempasa, Bukedi North Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and called on parents and communities to stay vigilant against child abuse.

Uganda’s 2024 crime report highlights a disturbing trend, with over 12,300 defilement cases recorded, including many by parents, guardians, and teachers. Despite a slight 3.4% drop from 2023, schools remain risky environments for pupils.
