Police in Kassanda District are probing the theft of a three-day-old baby girl from Kiganda Health Centre IV. The incident occurred on March 15, 2026, when a woman posing as a medical officer entered the postnatal ward.
The baby’s parents, Muhindo Joachim and Nalubowa Ruth from Katosi Cell in Kiganda Town Council, had brought their newborn to the facility on March 12 due to complications. She received treatment in the ICU before being moved to the postnatal ward on March 14.
The suspect mingled with patients, checked treatment notes, and approached the mother. She claimed the baby’s condition had worsened and needed urgent medication, handing over Shs10,000 for the mother to buy it from a nearby pharmacy.
As the mother stepped out, the woman fled with the infant. The case was reported to Kiganda Police Station, and investigations continue.
Wamala Region Police Spokesperson SSP Kigozi Lameck confirmed the details and appealed to the public: report any woman seen with a newborn under suspicious circumstances, particularly if she wasn’t known to be pregnant, to the nearest police station.
