Uganda Cup Matches Set Stage for Vipers vs Kitara League Showdown

Vipers and Kitara gear up for their pivotal Uganda Premier League clash on April 10 with Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 16 games on Wednesday acting as a crucial dress rehearsal. Vipers lead the table with 50 points, while Kitara trail at 46, fueled by a prior Fufa ruling that awarded them points. As the Uganda Premier League season intensifies, Vipers and Kitara are locked in a tight race at the top. Vipers hold first place with 50 points from 15 wins, five draws, and one loss, boasting a +28 goal difference. Kitara sit second on 46 points, with 14 wins, four draws, three losses, and a +21 goal difference.

Wednesday’s Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 16 fixtures offer a perfect preview. Vipers host Iganga United at 8pm at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, while Kitara face Bunyaruguru United at 3pm at Royals Park in Butema. These home games precede their key league encounter on April 10 at Kitende.

Tensions run high after a Fufa decision granted Kitara three points from an abandoned earlier match, marking Vipers’ sole league slip under coach Ivan Minnaert. Vipers’ president Lawrence Mulindwa has reportedly pledged a Shs300 million bonus for a title win, adding fuel to the fire.

Both squads boast strong depth. Kitara rested stars in their recent 4-0 victory over Buhimba United Saints. Vipers may bench attackers Odili Chukwuma, Milton Karisa, and Usama Arafat, turning to Gusto Mulongo and Beyuku Munsi. Kitara could feature George Ssenkaaba, preserving Patrick Kaddu and Muhammad Shaban.

Vipers, four-time Cup champions with doubles in 2023 and 2025, aim to advance alongside Kitara, last year’s winners, without risking key players ahead of the title-deciding league battle.
