Marshall Alenyo, the freshly elected MP for Jonam County in Pakwach District, has quickly emerged as a standout figure in Uganda’s 12th Parliament. Known as an eloquent lawyer and corporate influencer, he left a senior role at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2015 to join private practice, building a reputation as a skilled organizer and mobilizer.

Now, Alenyo is eyeing the deputy speaker position, a move that fits his history of seizing opportunities. Despite being a first-term lawmaker, his prospects are bolstered by an estimated bloc of 40 MPs from West Nile, plus the legacy of his late father, Esrom Alenyo, a revered Alur leader.

Political analyst Alex Wamala highlights that surprises like Anita Among’s 2021 speakership rise show ambition can pay off, though Alenyo must rally votes effectively. His legal acumen provides an edge in the experience-driven Parliament.

Alenyo’s network adds weight: strong Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) support helped deliver 72% for President Museveni in his FDC-leaning constituency. He also maintains ties with Odrek Rwabwogo, son-in-law to the president and a key advisor.

Commentators like Charles Rwomushana note that such proximity to power sways parliamentary races. West Nile seeks a national voice since Francis Ayume’s era, viewing Alenyo as a fresh, unifying force.

Even if incumbent Thomas Tayebwa holds the post now, regional rotation could favor West Nile in 2031 if Anita Among continues as speaker, positioning Alenyo for a future win. His approach exemplifies long-term political strategy.
