A tragic boat accident on Lake Victoria in Mayuge District, Eastern Uganda, has claimed six lives. The incident occurred on March 17 evening at Bugoto landing site in Bukaboli Sub-county when an overloaded boat capsized.

Local LC1 Chairman Sadala Wagende reported that three more bodies were retrieved on Wednesday, following the initial three deaths. Out of 14 passengers, eight were rescued.

The victims include Zulaika Naiwumbwe, Harriet Kisakye, Denis Mudobe, Badiru Gabunda Kapadu, Farouk Kapadu, and an unidentified toddler. The boat was ferrying farmers from Buyengo to Bugoto, loaded with potatoes, jackfruits, and bananas.

Survivor Jamila Nabwire Kapadu confirmed the overload contributed to the sinking during strong winds. Some passengers helped rescue others, including herself.

Boat owner Majidu Kapadu lost four family members and has appealed for government assistance. Busoga East police spokesperson Michael Kasadha noted marine police aided recovery efforts, with investigations underway.
