Scovia Cacio wakes up before dawn in Moyo District, handling household chores, preparing her three children for school, and heading to Penthouse Inn as a certified cook and assistant chef. This routine marks her journey from hardship to professional success after dropping out of primary school.
Orphaned at a young age, Cacio left Moyo Town Council Primary School in Primary Six following her father’s death. At 15, she became a housemaid for Dr. Jimmy Opigo’s family to make ends meet, setting aside her childhood dream of becoming an accountant.
Her career shifted when she joined the family’s hospitality business. Starting in entry-level kitchen roles, she learned from seven different chefs over nearly two decades, mastering local dishes like malakwang and smoked fish, then expanding to Indian, Chinese, and pizza recipes. Interacting with international guests boosted her English skills, enabling her to take orders confidently.
Seeking formal validation, Cacio enrolled in a Catering and Bakery certificate course with employer support, graduating three years ago. This achievement solidified her expertise despite her early school exit.
As the only woman in the kitchen, she thrives on discipline and stamina in a male-dominated environment. Her 18-year tenure at the inn, through marriage and motherhood, stems from viewing her employers as family.
Motherhood fuels her drive; she ensures her children— in Senior One, Primary Four, and baby class—attend school, paying fees from her earnings and breaking the cycle of hardship she faced.
Cacio now redefines success beyond degrees, embracing stable employment, skills, and family provision.
