The US Embassy in Kampala has detained 43 visa applicants caught with suspected forged documents since July last year. These individuals were stopped at the embassy and transferred to Ugandan police for legal action.

James V. Bloomer, Senior Regional Security Officer at the US Embassy, shared this update during a briefing at the Uganda Media Centre. He explained that the suspects tried to use fake paperwork to gain entry to the United States.

To combat overstays and unauthorized migration, the US has introduced stricter visa rules, including a refundable visa bond ranging from $5,000 (Shs18.8m) to $15,000 (Shs56m). Bloomer cautioned applicants not to pay this bond upfront, as scammers exploit desperate travelers.

He stressed the importance of adhering to visa conditions, especially stay durations, to avoid violations.

Uganda Police spokesman Rusoke Kituuma highlighted a rise in con artists posing as embassy intermediaries. These fraudsters, using fake IDs and letters, target naive or urgent applicants, take money, and vanish.

Kituuma assured the public that legitimate officials never demand payments for services and urged reporting suspicious approaches to authorities.
