Police in eastern Uganda apprehended five individuals accused of forming a gang that targets drivers on the Soroti-Moroto Road.
The operation followed a report lodged at Amukaru Railway Police Station in Soroti District after an attempted heist on March 15. The suspects—Emmanuel Emukot (21), Patrick Elamu (20), Emmanuel Okiring (22), Raymond Agole (22), and David Opiding (27)—all hail from Soroti District.
The botched robbery targeted motorcyclist Albert Okello at Arapai around 9:22pm on Sunday. East Kyoga regional police commander Ibrahim Saiga stated that the group wielded sticks, wires, and pangas to halt the rider, but Okello fled unharmed and notified authorities.
A rapid police response led to the arrests. The suspects were initially held at East Kyoga regional headquarters before transfer to Katine Central Police Station. Officers seized items like sticks and a black wire, described by Saiga as basic yet dangerous tools.
Investigations persist amid growing resident complaints about youth-led gangs setting up roadblocks to mug motorists and walkers. Saiga highlighted intensified security measures in the area due to surging crime rates.
The suspects face court once probes conclude.
