IGG Issues Two-Week Ultimatum to 202 Officials to Repay Stolen Funds or Face Charges

The Inspectorate of Government has ordered 202 public officials to settle their outstanding debts to the state by March 31, 2026, or risk prosecution for corruption and abuse of office. This final warning targets funds allegedly misused for personal gain, amid Uganda's annual loss of nearly Shs10 trillion to graft. The Inspector General of Government, Aisha Naluzze Batala, has issued a strict two-week deadline for 202 government officials to refund money owed to the state. Failure to comply by March 31, 2026, will lead to legal action.

In a Monday directive, the officials must visit the Inspectorate of Government (IG) to reconcile their balances. The debts stem from funds diverted for personal use, causing losses to public services.

“This is the final reminder to allow affected officers to comply, in line with natural justice principles,” the IGG stated. Non-compliant individuals face charges for disobeying orders and abusing office.

Notable defaulters include former Agriculture Ministry permanent secretary Pius Wakabi Kasaija (Shs205 million owed), Soroti University administrator Tine Mone and academic registrar James Okello (Shs2 million each), and lawyer Francis Harimwomugasho (Shs48 million).

The IG’s constitutional role involves fighting corruption, recovering misappropriated funds, and tackling maladministration. This move supports broader anti-graft efforts as Uganda loses about Shs10 trillion yearly to corruption.
