Police in Adjumani District are probing the death of a prison warder and the hospitalization of two others following the use of herbal charms to recover a stolen motorcycle.

On March 12, 2026, warder Daniel Ogwok’s motorcycle was taken from the prison barracks. To track it down, Ogwok brought in a witchdoctor named Emmanuel.

Around 1pm that day, the witchdoctor arrived and gave herbal medicine to prison staff to pinpoint the thief, according to SP Collins Asea, Police Spokesperson for North West Nile region.

The charm triggered severe reactions in three warders, leading to their treatment at the prison clinic. Despite orders to stop, the witchdoctor directed Ogwok to provide more herbs as a remedy.

Warder Mathaeus Wegumba, 30, died at the facility, while Akatukwasa and Felix Twinomugisa survived and are under care. Wegumba’s body went to Adjumani General Hospital for postmortem.

Ogwok and Emmanuel are fugitives as investigations proceed. SP Asea warned against turning to witchdoctors, urging reliance on police instead.
