Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine and president of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has announced his brief exit from Uganda. In a video shared on X, the 43-year-old opposition leader stated he is heading abroad for crucial meetings with global allies.

This comes after the January 2026 general elections, where President Museveni was officially declared the winner with 7,946,772 votes (71.65% of valid votes). Bobi Wine secured second place with 2,741,238 votes (24.72%) but dismissed the results as ‘fake’ and ‘fabricated,’ opting not to challenge them in court due to distrust in the judiciary.

For nearly two months post-election, Bobi Wine remained out of sight amid intense security operations. He claimed authorities raided colleagues’ homes, set up roadblocks, dismissed his campaign police officers, besieged his Magere residence, and even assaulted his wife during a raid.

“The people of Uganda sheltered and protected me,” he said, evading capture despite the regime’s efforts.

During his absence, NUP deputy president for Northern Uganda, Lina Zedriga, will act as party president. Bobi Wine intends to lobby international partners for targeted sanctions against the government before returning.

“I will return to Uganda and let the regime do whatever they want to me, in full view of the world,” he affirmed, noting he has committed no crime by running for president.

Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed ongoing security at Bobi Wine’s home for safety reasons, adding that no charges have been filed against him.
