1935 Gruesome Murder: Doctor Dismembers Wife and Maid in Jealous Rage

In a chilling 1935 case, forensic experts pieced together 70 body parts from a stream, identifying them as belonging to a doctor's wife and maid, both killed by the anatomically skilled physician driven by pathological jealousy. Advanced forensics, including photographic superimposition, led to his conviction and hanging. On September 29, 1935, a woman walking by a stream spotted a bundle with a human hand protruding, alerting police. They found two heads on the bank and four more packages containing thigh bones, legs, flesh, and a torso wrapped in a local newspaper dated September 15.

Forensic pathologists at a nearby university examined the 70 fragments, determining they came from two women—one about six inches taller than the other. The cuts through joints suggested medical expertise, with skin removed from faces, fingertips severed, and teeth extracted to hinder identification. Hair on the smaller body and recovered hands allowed fingerprinting after treatment.

The taller victim, middle-aged, showed stab wounds, broken bones, bruises, and a fractured hyoid bone from strangulation. The younger, around 20, had been battered with a blunt object.

Suspicion turned to a local doctor who reported his wife missing five days earlier, claiming she took their pregnant maid for an abortion. A servant’s blouse matched wrappings confirmed by the maid’s family. The doctor’s home was chaotic post-disappearance, with stained bath, burnt materials, and bloodied items given to a neighbor for cleaning.

Interrogation revealed the doctor’s jealousy; his stormy marriage included prior abuse complaints. A recent fight over suspected infidelity led him to strangle and stab his wife, then kill the intervening maid. He dismembered them and dumped the parts miles away.

At trial, he denied the identities, but photographic superimposition proved them, securing a guilty verdict. He was hanged on May 12, 1936.
