Uganda’s golf team suffered a 10.5-15.5 defeat to Kenya in the 2026 Victoria Cup at Entebbe Club, marking a painful failure to defend their title won last year in Naivasha. The hosts managed only one win in the first 12 foursomes and four-balls matches, with Reagan Akena and Peter Mayende securing a 4&3 victory over Daniel Kiragu and Isaac Makokha on day one.

After heavy losses in the initial team sessions, Uganda needed eight of 10 singles wins on the final day to retain the trophy, but the singles ended in a 5-5 draw. Pivotal moments included teenager Mwathi Gicheru’s par on the 16th to beat Amon Bwambale 3&2, and John Lejirma’s eagle on the 18th to overcome Reagan Akena 2-up.

Coach Flavia Namakula and captain John Musiimenta pointed to poor pairings, defensive play on the back nine, and fitness issues as major setbacks. Uganda often led early but faltered under pressure, contrasting Kenya’s confident aggression.

Kenya’s edge stemmed from superior preparations, including a Naivasha team camp for chemistry building, extensive amateur exposure with 33 annual tournaments, and robust junior programs backed by sponsors like NCBA Bank. Kenyan players like Elvis Muigua emphasized how constant competition fostered dominance.

Uganda’s challenges include limited stroke-play events, weekend-dominated amateur scene, subjective team selections without formal qualifiers, and insufficient incentives. While a $100-per-win offer from Michael Tumusiime spurred three four-balls victories on day two, broader motivation lags behind Kenya’s structured rewards.

Calls for reform focus on reviving qualifiers, boosting junior golf like the recent NCBA-U.S Kids Series, increasing competitive exposure, and enhancing fitness and mindset training ahead of next year’s event.
