The Police Disciplinary Unit under the Directorate of Counter Terrorism has charged nine officers tasked with protecting National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, with disobedience and neglect of duty. A recommendation for their dismissal from the force has been made.
These officers, drawn from units like the Tactical Unit, VIPPU, and Vital Installations Protection Unit, were accused of not accounting for Bobi Wine’s whereabouts when he vanished from his Magere Village home in Wakiso District in February, shortly after the general elections.
Out of 16 officers provided to each presidential candidate by the Counter Terrorism Directorate—with allowances covered by the Electoral Commission—nine now face this action. They were arrested last Friday on orders from Counter Terrorism Director AIGP David Wasswa and detained at Railway Police Station in Kampala.
The charged officers have 14 days to appeal the decision to the disciplinary committee chairman. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated he had not been briefed on the issue, while the Police Professional Standards Unit commandant declined comment, referring queries to him.
Bobi Wine, posting on social media, claimed the officers were dismissed with disgrace for allegedly aiding his escape during a military raid, calling the accusation ‘crazy’ and noting they were off duty by then. The Daily Monitor could not independently verify the officers’ names, though some like Jeff Okodan, John Osike, and others were mentioned in reports.
