Police in Kisoro District are investigating the death of 26-year-old Hassan Mwijuke, a boda boda rider from Gafuruzo Parish in Nyarubuye Sub-county. He was killed during an operation to recover a stolen motorcycle.

The red Bajaj Boxer, registered UGA 313U, was reported missing on March 6 from Rwenturagara Cell in Mbarara City’s North Division. Its owner, Benson Nambajira, had employed Mwijuke as casual labor before the theft. Mwijuke allegedly tricked Nambajira’s wife into handing over the bike by claiming her husband sent him.

After the report at Kakika Police Station on March 7, surveillance footage traced the motorcycle through Ntungamo toward the Kabale-Kisoro corridor. Officers coordinated across districts and located Mwijuke on March 12 along the Kisoro-Bunagana Road as he tried to pick up a passenger.

Police ordered him to stop and announced his arrest, but he reportedly fled. Warning shots were fired, and when he did not comply, an officer shot him in the head, leading to his death.

The scene was processed by a team including the District Police Commander, homicide detectives, and Scene of Crime Officers, who recovered six cartridges. The officers involved have been detained to aid the ongoing inquiry, as stated by Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate.
