Football fans in Bunyoro are buzzing as Kitara takes on struggling Buhimba United Saints in the Uganda Premier League on Friday. This Bunyoro derby at the newly opened Hoima City Stadium promises more than just points—regional rivalry, revenge, and history are all up for grabs.
Kitara, sitting second with 43 points and chasing the title under coach Wasswa Bbosa, steps up from their modest Royals Park home to the swanky $129 million Hoima City Stadium. Built by Turkish firm MS Summa and commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni in December 2025, the 16.8-acre complex in Mparo Division features a modern football pitch, training areas, running track, indoor arena, and semi-Olympic pool. It’s also slated as a venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Adding spice, former Buhimba defender Edson Agondeze now plays for Kitara after switching sides last month. He scored the winner in Buhimba’s 1-0 victory earlier this season, setting up an emotional showdown. Kitara boosted morale with a recent 1-0 win over Mbarara City, while Buhimba reels from a home loss to Bul and fights relegation with 15 points.
Thousands of supporters are expected to pack the stands for this landmark match at 4pm. Other fixtures include Bul vs Mbarara City at Fufa Technical Centre and Police vs Nec in Kampala.
