President Yoweri Museveni has tapped Girma Wake, a prominent Ethiopian aviation leader and ex-CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, to serve as Acting Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines.

The decision comes via a February 13, 2026 directive to Works and Transport Minister Edward Katumba Wamala, citing critical governance and operational shortcomings at the national carrier.

Museveni ordered Wake’s immediate appointment as Consultant/Advisor to tackle these problems, with him acting as CEO until a permanent replacement is named by July 2026. He will collaborate closely with the airline’s Board during this period.

Meanwhile, incumbent CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki must step aside right away and facilitate a smooth handover to Wake and the Board.

Wake’s vast experience heading one of Africa’s top airlines is expected to help stabilize Uganda Airlines amid its persistent challenges and rebuild stakeholder trust.
