State Minister for Housing and MP for Bukono Constituency, Persis Namuganza, has announced her intention to contest for the Speaker position in the upcoming 12th Parliament.
Namuganza emphasized her commitment to transforming the legislature by promoting transparency, objectivity, and zero tolerance for corruption. ‘I have officially declared my candidacy for the Speaker of the 12th Parliament of Uganda. My mission is to restore the dignity of our House through transparency, objectivity, and a corruption-free legislature. I am ready to lead a Parliament that truly serves the people of Uganda,’ she declared.
Political sources suggest Namuganza is receiving support from former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, who has a history of rivalry with the incumbent Anita Among. This alleged endorsement could strengthen her position in the race.
Namuganza’s immediate challenge is securing endorsement from the NRM party’s Central Executive Committee, which could significantly alter Parliament’s leadership dynamics. The contest is expected to be highly competitive as power blocs form.
