Museveni Declares Uganda's Opposition 'Dead' After 2026 Election Win

President Yoweri Museveni claimed that Uganda's opposition is on its deathbed following his 2026 election victory, attributing it to the National Resistance Movement's (NRM) strong nationwide support and a transparent voting process aided by technology. Opposition leaders like Bobi Wine rejected the results, alleging irregularities, intimidation, and an internet shutdown. President Yoweri Museveni has ignited controversy by stating that Uganda’s opposition parties are effectively finished after the 2026 general elections.

In remarks made right after his win was declared, Museveni highlighted the NRM’s overwhelming popularity across the country. He described the polls as free, fair, and bolstered by biometric voter checks and other tech measures to prevent fraud.

“The opposition is now on its deathbed. Ugandans have clearly chosen NRM and rejected confusion. Technology has helped us ensure a clean and transparent process,” he said.

Opposition figures pushed back hard. National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, called the outcome invalid due to reported irregularities, voter intimidation, and a blackout of internet services during voting.

NRM backers celebrated the comments as evidence of their dominance, but detractors see them as a sign of stifled political freedoms. Uganda’s political scene stays deeply divided as election fallout lingers.
