Uganda’s vibrant tourism sector has received a significant international endorsement, securing the “Best Exquisite Destination Award” at the recent Outbound Travel Mart (OTM) 2026 in Mumbai, India. The prestigious event, held from February 5-7, saw Uganda’s High Commissioner to India, Ambassador Prof. Joyce Kikafunda, accept the award on behalf of the nation.

The Ugandan delegation included representatives from the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Airlines, and private sector stakeholders. This participation aimed to forge new collaborations with Indian tour operators and agents to boost tourism from the Asian market.

Vincent Operemo, UTB Board Director, highlighted the award’s alignment with Uganda’s Vision 2040, which emphasizes tourism as a crucial sector for foreign exchange, employment, and economic growth. OTM, South Asia’s largest travel exhibition, attracted over 50,000 professionals and 2,200 exhibitors globally.

Uganda showcased its primary attractions, including its rich wildlife, adventure opportunities, and cultural heritage. Ambassador Prof. Kikafunda expressed pride in the “Team Uganda” effort, stating that the award validates Uganda’s distinctive and authentic African tourism experiences and supports sustainable development goals.

This recognition comes as tourism plays an increasingly vital role in Uganda’s economy, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. Recent growth in international arrivals and revenue, bolstered by infrastructure improvements and conservation efforts, underscores the country’s post-pandemic recovery. With efforts to attract 2.5 million visitors annually by 2030, this award marks a key step in elevating Uganda’s global tourism profile as the “Pearl of Africa.”
