Sending an SMS will return with a pin code worth of Internet surfing time. This is what Uganda Telecom mobile wifi hotspots can do for you.
A number of hotspot zones are in place implying that if you are in these places and you send an sms to the details which will be provided at the end of the article, you will be able to surf the internet on your GSM/GPRS enabled phone.
You can still go to any internet café to access the net but in case you are in any of these places i.e. Fat Boys Chicago Restaurant, Iguana and Just Kicking all in Kisementi, Java Coffee shop on Bombo road, Good African Coffee at Shoprite Lugogo plus Hotel Triangle & Jinja Nile Resort in Jinja, you will be able to use this service.
How Do You Get Your Surf Time?
Simply go to messages type UTHS1 and send to 167. This will cost you 2,000/-(Two Thousand shillings only) which is the equivalent of 1 USD and a pin for 1 hour surfing time will be sent to you in return. Do the same if you want more hours by replacing one with 3 or 6 and you will be charged 5,000/- and 10,000/- Ugx respectively.
Other hotspot areas in Kampala are Mateos, Tal Cottages in Rubaga and Pizzeria Restaurant in Bugolobi.
This is applicable to UTL subscribers with phones enabled to do that but other carriers will certainly roll out similar plans. WARID has a modem going for 150,000/- and a monthly of 85,000/- to at least get you moving for 30 days. You must have a computer or laptop though as the tools required.
Iam coming to Uganda for a month's working holiday of lecturing at one of the universities. But for most of the stay, I will be based in a rural area. What service can you give me to enable me access internet on my laptop throughout my stay???????? How much would it cost me in Uganda terms? How do I access the service in Uganda and where? How reliable is the service??? I would appreciate your fast and genuine answers to these 5/6 questions. Thank you

Hi Dr. John, There are a number of services. MTN has a 3G modem going for 320,000/- and a monthly fee of 90,000/- WARID has 2G Modem costing 150,000/- and a monthly of 85,000/-. In both options there is cost of a sim card which should be 3,000/- or less. Short of that you can access the various service centers for any options over and above those listed.

good day admin. i am a business man in lugazi and jinja. thanksalot Utl that in jinja we can access your wireless internet at a price which is affordable. in jinja my cafe was connect to your wireless service and does well. Admin allow me to request you that also think about lugazi as that service is not there there yet when i contact your area office, the information i received shows how orange happens to be cheating us becoz they are the only isp with the wireless service in the area. please we people and owners of internet cafes in lugazi in our which we held on sun agreed that incase you extended that service to us, all shall join UTL wireless internet

I will be rural Mbale Uganda in June. I need a reliable wireless internet connection that is about 15 km outside of Mbale. Whom should I contact that provide that kind of service. I need email addresses. The websites do not provide this.

utl gives 100mb for shs.500 which is okey but again it is very slow and that makes their services very pooor. Indeed utl MUST increase on its speed but otherwise we shall divert to other networks where our issues are quickly adressed.thanks by engineer kayemba henry.
