The Inspector General of Police has launched a drive that involves the public in fighting crime. Over 30 police vehicles have been made available to the public. This will ensure security and safety that goes beyond the festive season.
The system will start with Kampala but later roll out to other parts of the country. The police vehicles have toll free numbers inscribed on them for ease of contact. "Police must go to the community integrate itself in the community, turn the community into a police force if you want because the first line of policing must be yourself..."
Plans are underway to increase the vehicles from 35 to 60 in the near future. The Inspector General of Police adds that a lot of home work has been done and preliminary findings show that to fight crime effectively, the public must be involved.
In a related move, traffic police deployment has been increased from 300 officers to 1,000 in the recent past.
