Kampala has this afternoon experienced another nightmare courtesy of the upcoming Kampala Malls. Part of Mirembe Shopping Arcade a three storey building on Nasser Road collapsed wounding some and killing others.
The collapse of the arcade is alleged to have been caused by a deep foundation next to it. Police blocked the Nasser road to all traffic bringing business to a standstill as all attention was on the collapsed building from all corners. This area literally does all the printing for Kampala and other areas.
At least six people have been confirmed dead and about eight sustained injuries. By 7:00pm Police and Ambulances were still at the scene though chances of people still trapped in the rubble had been ruled out then.
Some Nkrumah and Nasser Road fellows were of the view that they could still be people trapped in the rubble now that these malls and offices in these areas normally have so many occupants coupled with customers.
2 weeks back a foundation collapsed killing one. The memories of the Pension towers at Lumumba Avenue are still fresh and now calamities like the Owino Market fire which fortunately claimed no lives and the cargo plane which crashed killing all on board are raising eyebrows.
