The opposition activists have changed strategy. On Saturday, as the Inter Parliamentary Union was being launched in Munyonyo, the opposition leader Kizza Besigye parked along Luwum street in his pajero.
He sat in the car reading his newspaper as some of his supporters kept on chatting him through the car window that was slightly lowered. Other members who included the Kampala Woman MP Nabila Nagayi Ssempala were locked up in another vehicle.
They paralyzed this section of the city for close to an hour as police pleaded with them to drive off. Shop owners at this very spot were seen closing their shops as police officers were being deployed to deal with the opposition leaders who were doing this to protest their rights to free movement.
A police break down vehicle came at the scene and towed Besigye's car to Kasangati police station as he remained seated at the back. According to the Deputy Spokesperson of Police, Judith Nabakooba, this was done to avoid chaos.
Besigye will be released once they feel that it is safe to do so. The 126th Inter Parliamentary Union Conference is taking place in Kampala between Mar 31- Apr 05, 2012. The ladies of the night who normally operate around Serena Hotel have been chased, some roads have also been blocked to ensure the safety of the IPU conference.
