The war is on amongst telecommunication giants and once again sending very strong signals to those new companies wishing to join the industry to better come with very attractive packages or risk being pushed out before starting.

Uganda now has five telecom operators and more are yet to come. MTN, UTL, Zain, Warid and Orange are currently up and serving the country of about 31Mn people. Early this year MTN launched its mobile money transfer (Mobile Money Transfer Now in Uganda) within the country where by users could send money to any mobile phone in the country. In less than six months Zain has retaliated with even a bigger version which they say is more than money transfer because one will be able to send money not only in Uganda but to East Africa.

The service dubbed Zap can be used to pay bills and pay for goods and services, withdraw money from one's bank account and also send airtime to any Zain phone in East Africa among others. However as Zain was launching the Zap, MTN in partnership with Google and Grameen foundation were launching the Google SMS.(Google Launches SMS Service in Uganda).
