Amazingly WARID Telecom is next to the MTN Business centre, so I make my way there. I ask the lady, Madam I want to connect to the Internet with WARID after promising us the best service ever, the lady told me we are not yet ready. I asked the lady what does that mean, she replied we have not yet launched. I asked when will you launch? she said soon! She noticed I was still not very amused, she decided to send me to the customer centre on Jinja road. I told her I'm right now standing at the head office and I'm not able to get answers that lead me to what I want would that be possible from the Customer centre? I excused myself.
That was mid week and over the weekend I walked to the customer centre of course not expecting better answers I received from head office, I walked in and oh yes it is a nice office they have on Jinja road. I asked the lady on how easy it would be to connect to the Internet with WARID? She told me that they have not launched. I did not want anything more but being that she is at the customer centre, I took her on with their website. Under the ''Contact Us'' section the website had a toll free number which could not connect non warid customers and to make matters worse one could never get a reply from the queries sent through the form. She was surprised the number was not on the website that could connect all incoming calls irrespective of network. The good news is as I write this I noticed a change had been made on the website in that section and they clearly give numbers for warid customers to call and non warid customers. The number was in place but the adjustments on the website had not yet been done.
I have not yet gone to Wampewo avenue to get details from Celtel on cheap Internet connections for small businesses and individuals.
It is important to note that for now the internet is still very slow and very costly in Uganda because we connect using satelite. The highest kbps will only give you faster connections but at a high price. Cheap and fast internet is expected in 2009 after the underground fibre optic cables from Mombasa are fully installed. We could feature this in times to come.
